I think Fabiano will win the last game with Black pieces.
Fabiano Caruana! The Historic Candidate from the US!

This was a fantastic Candidates Tournament indeed! It is time to congratulate Fabiano Caruana! It is also good to acknowledge all other players for their fighting spirit.

I was watching the streaming in Russian by GM Shipov who also acknowledges mastery of GM Caruana!

I wonder if Caruana's success will be picked up by American media and lead to a higher popularization of chess in the United States. While Caruana is not Fischer, having an American Candidate is a big deal and may have a powerful impact...

Did you forget Gata Kamsky who challenged Karpov in the mid 90s
That doesn't really count as Karpov was NOT the real World Champion, Kasparov was.

Hopefully, but I can’t see it being big news. Unless he wins against Magnus, which is sadly unlikely. Then a certain someone will say he won because that someone made America “great again.” He’ll claim credit despite the fact that he previously claimed the US has no Grand Masters.
Doesn't matter about opinions on what is real and what isn't. Karpov is officially recognised as a world champion in the mid 90s and thus Gata an official candidate.

It is not just my opinion. It's a fact. In this case, it's FIDE and its nonrecognition of Kasparov is wrong. Kasparov was the World Champion from 1985-2000, end of story. That's what the history of chess was.

LOL. I think when he said something about Grand Masters he meant it for trade, NOT chess. That much was obvious if you have seen the context, not just the headline.
As for your other point, I somewhat agree. Caruana's victory in the Candidates may, indeed, go unnoticed in the media and that would be unfortunate. And if Caruana does win, it will be an explosion all of a sudden.

But I still do hope that even becoming the Candidate won't go unnoticed in the American media. Because it is kind of a big deal. Even if Carlsen retains his title, having an American player compete in the World Championship match is a big deal for popularization of the game in the United States.
I don't know why you want to disregard Kraprov's reign as a Champion. Its official and you can try your best you can't disregard history. Karpov is officially recognised as a 6 time world champion and he wouldn't be a 6 time world champion if you dont count his reign in the 90s. The number wont add up.
I know there are those who question the validity of his title, but those are opinions. FIDE officially recognises Karpov as a champion and thats all there is to it.

"you can't terminate -- there's too many people, you go crazy. It's like you have to be a grand chess master. And we don't have any of them."

I have my doubts that even having an American World Chess Champion will even be picked up by the large medium. But it would be nice

Karpov is my favorite player actually. And as much as I like him, he was NOT the champion in the 90s, Kasparov was. Karpov was the champion from 1975-85. I don't care what FIDE bureaucracy did in the 90s. The title was disputed back then but in REALITY, Kasparov was the champion in the 90s. Then Kramnik, and only then, when reunification match took place, Anand. That's how it went, there can be little doubt about it.

I think the quote is wrong. I remember seeing the clip where the certain someone was talking about trade and how it was like other countries are like playing chess and have grandmasters... and we have none of those. These words were being interpreted as if he was saying that the US didn't have any chess grandmasters but he was, in fact, referring to trade. If you can find the clip in question and insert it here, the context will be more clear. Not that all of it really matters here, lol.
The game with the Russian player is still ongoing but there's little doubt that he will manage to at least draw the game. His position is actually winning, so he is slated to become the first American Candidate since Robert J. Fischer.
Edit.: And he did it!
