Faking a LOW rating to win !!

Most player's hover around a different rating than the outside world. My club rating is around 2035, but here I'm currently at 1800, but with all these chess engines, and other stuff I probably will stay around 1800-1900s doing online chess.

Some people are just really inconsistent, I happen to be one of the players in that category. I get accused of cheating fairly often when I beat higher-rated player on FICS, but it's really just that I'm having a good day. In fact, that's one of the reasons I play as often as I do; it's a good reality check for how well the gray matter is functioning on that particular day.

Good point. Only i'd say that sometimes i have not good but bad days and my rating is falling down much. Couple weeks ago i was under 1200 and now i'm around 1500. Was i faking? Of course not. My brain wasn't functioning 100% those days. Probably some people are rated 1100 thought that i'm a sandbagger. I'm just not stable.

Omega_Doom, are you talking about online chess or Live blitz ? My rating fluctuates a fair amount as well in online Chess so I see your point if thats what you are referring to.

In Blitz Chess though in my experience ( I am usually around 1100-1200 ) I can almost always outplay someone rated in the 800-900 range, without too much difficulty. Although my play that game was truly horrid, it still shocked me, which led me to start this topic.

The guy blundered a pawn on move 3. Sounds like an 800 to me.

good point !

I guess when you get right down to it, in Blitz Chess, anything can happen in any given game due to the speed of it. I have beaten stronger players and lost to lower rated players many times. There is no smoking gun here, especially upon review of the game and thanks to some great input.

Anyone who plays alot of Blitz should be ready for anything, and don't have any expectations surrounding ratings.

odisea777

so they lose a whole bunch of games deliberately, just so they can appear to beat someone way beyond their rating?? Weird.

My rating in Bullet/Blitz is around 900 because I usually play against players rated over 1100; my actual rating is probably better than 900 but it gets beat to hell because I'm constantly up against higher rated players in <1200 tourneys. That doesn't mean I'm not going to win once in awhile.

Omega_Doom

slimcheffy. I don't see much difference between online and blitz games. If i'm in bad shape than it doesn't matter i just lose games more often. It's kind of weather sensitivity.

Not sure it's 100% weird. I played several times in tournaments 1200-1500 and looks like some guys are sandbaggers there. Usually i can win three games and last two i lose. Most likely it's the same story under 1200. So it will be difficult for you to win it.

P.S i see you did it, congrats. Probably i'll never do it.

a "blunder" made by a 2500 FIDE, and Vladislav (2600 FIDE) didnt accept the gambit

aha so the plot thickens !! It seems anyone can blunder, so this does not prove my opponent was an 800 at all !

his 3rd move was not a blunder for sure

I guess it's open to interpretation.

2...Bc5?!, 3...Nf6?!, 5...Ng4?, 12...Nd7?? (12...Qxa1 wins on spot.), 13...Ne5?!, 15...Qg6? (15...Qxf2+ wins for Black.), 16...c6?, 22...Qxb2?! (This wins, but isn't the quickest path to victory.), 23...Rfe8+?! (This wins, but 23...Qxd2 would lead to a forced win in 3.), among other mistakes and inaccuracies. For the rest of the game, your opponent made an easy win into a hard one. So, what do you think your opponent's rating was? 1700? It sure did look like an 800-rated player. Just for your information, I used Stockfish for analyzing it, so I'm sure the analysis is correct.

I have beaten people 200+ points higher than me (and since increased my rating) and I have been beaten by people over 400 points below me. Blitz is so fun because anyone can win. I've also noticed in tournaments players perform much better than in live chess. You need to stop whining and try to imporve your chess. Everyone loses.

(My rating fluctuates from 1550-1750. Just in the past few months I've gone from 1500 to over 1750. People improve!)

You are not talking about Greta-sGotTalent, are you?

here is another example of this same type of thing , copy and pasted :

Has this happened to anyone else ? I entered a recent tournament and was placed in a 1201-1400 group. One of the players whom I won't name entered the group with a rating of 1219 ( the lowest in the group ) .

Quite quickly into the match I realized she was much stronger than a 1219 and  she proceeded to beat me hands down in both games. I found the overwhelming strength of her game to be a bit odd so I decided to check out her history.

I found  her rating was already up to 1627, only a week after starting the tournament !

About a week later I noticed  she had lost 16 consecutive games in 24hrs to get her rating back down to a 1232. This is obviously a direct manipulation of her own ratings in order to qualify for tournaments at a lower rating than she actually is !

Why would anyone do this ?

How can it be fun to "beat up" on a group of players who play at a much lower level than yourself ?

Obsessed with winning ? Obsessed with power ? Bored ? What is it ?

Anyway, she ruined the tournament for me............it's too bad, has anyone else had a similar situation ?

Nicely said! Unfortunately, people never do that and always fret over their losses, whine, accuse their opponent, etc.

It's a pity people do that, but it's only natural. That being said, I wish people wouldn't post about it on forums.

justus_jep

Players rated 800 are out to get me! They are holding a low rating on purpose.

Yes, you're completely right. Life is too short for people to always fret over their mistakes, and blame others for it. We can't prevent ourselves from making mistakes, as we're not perfect. People don't understand this. It's shameful behavior, but unfortunately, we have to deal with it.
