Fastest way to improve is progress, not perfection. If you want progress, work on your mistakes after every game. The less mistakes you make, the better you get. If you want to learn tricks try doing more puzzles, they will help you see things like checkmates, forced checkmates, forking pieces, discovered checks, and pinning pieces.

11 year old chess prodigy Oliver Boydell says that the best way to improve quickly is to play consistently, every day, AND do tactics and puzzles. I would add that you should analyze your games as often as possible. That’s what I call intentional playing. After seeing that video, I started doing more tactics and puzzles and analyzing a couple of months ago and my rating has improved in three different games. Went from about a 1300/1400 to 1500/1600. Think about it this way, let’s say you play a game and get beaten in a certain combination of moves. Then a couple days later you encounter the same scenario and you think, “boy, what did the analysis say about this again? I sure wish I would’ve looked at it many times, because then I could remember those moves and use them to defeat my opponent right now.” Wouldn’t that feel great?

I like to read books and try to apply what I learned on a match, watching videos and analysing nice players matches are very helpful too

tl;dr: Focused, deliberate practice on specific elements of the game (i.e. openings, middlegame, endgame, tactics, pawn structures, etc.). Read books, watch videos, and DON'T play more games!
