Jose Raoul Capablanca. He was not only a chess genius, but was also a gentleman, and gained only admiration and respect from his fellow chess players. Extraordinary that he didn't bother to learn any openings until he was a World Championship candidate!

I like Nigel Short. I'm English living in the US and I grew up watching Nigel Short play chess. He may not be the best there ever was but he got a whole generation of English kids interested in chess and he fights like hell when playing - great stuff.
(some of my other favourite players are more obvious - Karpov, Kasparov, Timman and Nunn for fight and flair and Speelman for sheer geeky mind power!)
