Favorite Wine?

My preference is something with a small-village appellation in Burgundy (pinot noir), about 8-12 years old. They need a bit of aging but won't continue to improve for as long as Bordeaux (cabernet sauvignon).
A little-known gem you might want to check out is Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. It's the same--grapes (primarily sangiovese), soil, climate, regulation--as Brunello di Montalcino, one of Italy's best reds. It's actually part of the same vinicultural area, but it's a small bit that was across the border when DOC names originated before the unification of Italy. As a small part of the region the name has less cachet and far better prices. Don't confuse it with Montepulciano di Abruzzi, a perfectly drinkable vin ordinaire from elsewhere in Italy.
