I have to repeat that his performance rating in the Olympiad was 3056, which should be quite intimidating to foes in the future.
FIDE World Chess Championship Singapore 2024: Official Discussion Thread

Kamsky faded mainly because he quit playing for 8 years while he was still improving & at a young age. I think he stopped right after the Karpov match.
Also, & many don't remember or know this, Kamsky beat both Kramnik AND Anand in matches on the way to the Karpov match. I'm certain Kamsky had what it took to be world champion, he just stopped after the loss to Karpov.

That is a very decent comparison, considering that players are maturing quicker than in the past because of access to quality teachings. Kamsky quit playing after 1996, when he finished with a 2720 rating at the age of 22, and did not resume playing until 2005 when he was 30. For the record, he had been as high as 2745 at age 22 before his semi-retirement before dropping to the 2720.

It is also relevant to the earlier growth of young players that they have constant access to online competition that is tougher than they could find at home.

Also, for the record, Gata Kamsky achieved a peak rating of 2763 at the age of 39, so clearly improvement is possible after age 30 if one is still dedicated. Had he been not-retired for such a period, he could possibly have been another 2800 player. But I don't think that Gukesh is going to quit soon after earning a $1,500,000 paycheck.
Many seem to believe that Gukesh will win this going away, but it has to count for something that Ding is 2-0-1 career against him in classical games, with the two wins at Wijk Aan Zee with the black pieces in the past two years - when Ding has been at his worst.

Quite possible, but he is special (Gukesh), and has an emotional and mental stability that seems mature enough to press on to near perfection.
