I looked up the paper on the "Amsterdam Chess Test" on which the Elometer test is based.

The key excerpts relating to this discussion:
* Most items were chess problems taken from Bloch (1994), Suetin (1976), and Portisch and Srkozy (1986).
* While the participant was solving an item, a small clock located below the diagram displayed the time that remained before the allotted 30 seconds elapsed. The participants were instructed to find the best move for white as quickly as possible.
So the positions were relatively well-known and the time limit was only 30 seconds.
Furthermore, the full "Amsterdam Chess Test" had four other parts. Only 215 players in the study completed the full test and had Elo ratings.
There are good reasons to be skeptical of the Elometer test as presented on the website.

What are the chances that it could be wrong for all of us?! 95% confident, I'll take those odds. I'm definitely a 2200 player, despite my low ratings on every chess site and OTB. I surely haven't had enough OTB games yet 
I'll just give it another 20 years, and maybe then my OTB rating will catch up
NationalPatzer: Turns out there was a 30 second time limit per position on the real test. No one did the test under that limitation.
It stands to reason the results skewed upward, sometimes ridiculously so, for chess.com participants.

no way I would be rated as high as it says. I'm guessing I would be rated 800 after enough games to get a true number. not 1506 like this little test. I had been up for 22 hours and finished in about 35 minutes. probably supposed to glance and move-10 seconds or so. Is the reliability and validity posted somewhere? (not just anecdotal 'evidence' from chess.com).

i got 1511, how can improve?
I had 2249 in that elo meter. ( I did that test about 3 years ago)

Got back into chess two weeks ago.
Got 1597 and i'm 700 .. Is this an evidence of the level I could actually reach ? (I started a month ago)

I am underrated for USCF and i got this...
I have been doing chess for 7 years and I have not even done much OTB chess. Probably been doing it for a month now.

No, actually this is not accurate. There are way to many positions included that I knew already and so it took less than 30 minutes to do it.
Besides it is much easier once you know there is a best or only move. In real play you have to decide between different moves which seem to be same quality, but often enough are not.
The positions in the Volokitin book are a much better test.
I also found too many I knew. Some of them were endgames which you are supposed to already know. And also there were some positions that were middlegame strategy so you didn't have a clear beast mvoe.
