first time at a chess club

Had a blast! Got beat by a 13 year old twice! Lol. That doesn't bother me, but I didn't play well. In both my games I blundered twice. Pretty basic ones too that I should have caught. First time I'd played an opponent otb in years. Is it a good idea to play less on the computer until otb doesn't look out of place and awkward? Anybody have this happen to them? Any tricks or just power through it?

Chess is more fun when playing face to face. Frankly playing online gets boring sometimes. Also I'm retired so going to the club gives me an excuse to get out of the house. Also there's a junk food store across the street and I like to pig out on their pork sausages.

Some of the 8 to 13 year olds at these chess clubs are very good....there is a 10 year old at a nearby club here that is 1800, and some of the 15-20 year olds play at expert to master level...age doesn't mean much...usually the younger the better to a certain point..

Good to hear that you went to the chess club.  I think you will like it the more you go.  Just keep going - you'll eventually get used to playing OTB.  To help with this, pehaps confine your chess preparation to using only a real board & set for the day or two prior to going to the club.  This should help to "adjust" your OTB visualization.

Thanks for the advise!
I like the idea of only playing otb for a few days before club. I think that might be a great idea. I usually play a game or two a week out of a book. I'll step that up I think.
I'm definitely not "butt hurt" about losing. I was kind of looking forward to seeing some kid whoop on me, haha! His dad was sitting next to us and told me after the game that he can't even play him anymore. The kid told me he's in chess clubs at school and played a tourney over the weekend. I'm glad I put up a decent fight:)
Can't wait to go back!!!

I'm sure those are all valid concerns to the OP, Frank. Perhaps he has a job, hates junk food, and loves playing online

I was just pointing out that its fun going to chess clubs. I live in a quiet neighborhood in Brooklyn where there's not a lot to do. I'm sure that your life in Scotland is much more exciting since all those people are walking around in skirts with no underwear especially since Scotland is well known for its strong winds.

I didn't want to mention brand names but I like the Bahama Mama's at 7 Eleven located across the street from the library where we play chess. I consider this to be a health food because they allow us to put pickels and sauerkraut on them. They say fermented food is good for you. Strangely enough this is in a Jewish neighborhood.
