FM is no title!

Everyone want to be GMs. I am ashamed of being a FM: it's not a title. We have no chances against GMs, they can beat us blindfolded and drunken AND playing blitz. Nobody wants to be a FM, everyone want to be THE GM. Why on earth I took this so called "title" to my FIDE profile *facepalm*

You have to be an FM before you can be a GM. At least I think so... Maybe there are loopholes lol.

And the 2500 GMs think they're just fake GMs because they're so weak. Real GMs are at least 2600. Real players beat 2500 GMs drunk, blitz, and blindfolded.

An IM title plus three GM norms is the usual qualification for GM, but there are other ways to gain the title.

FM doesn't get much respect. Better than NM, though.

Welcome to the amazing world of online chess and thank you for apologizing. Now go to learn how to convert a winning endgame in less than 3.8 sec and come back to talk about your title.

...and don't ask how you do that! It's not easy to move your mouse twelve times in less than 3.8 sec. It requires an online chess title first.

Not quite. Three GM norms and a 2500+ standard FIDE rating (it can even be a "live" rating [i.e. not published but in the middle of a rating list]) is required. No IM title is necessary, but obviously it's usually the case that an IM title comes before a GM one. By definition, a GM must also be an FM as the only requirement for an FM is a 2300+ standard FIDE rating, so lower than the rating requirement for a GM without any norm requirements. It is possible, I suppose, for one to have 3 GM norms and a rating of 2299 which goes to 2500 in one rating list (which would require a massive number of games) and therefore to skip out becoming an FM.

Certainly it's not the case that an FM title is meaningless. It requires an above-average level of ability at the game and a lot of study (most people could reach about 2000 if they dedicated their life to it, but most of us don't have the time or inclination!), plus it gets you free membership on here and discounted entry to most tournaments. Plus it puts you in the top 1% of players in the world.
