For anyone who enjoys blitz chess: I'll never understand you.

I play chess on many different chess sites and OTB, and I have no trouble whatsoever playing slow games (sometimes with a time increment). It's nice and relaxing, you can take your time, and you actually have time to think and calculate positions (i.e. what chess is supposed to be about)!

But blitz? Forget it. It's too hard and frustrating. Blunders galore from both sides, running out of time. I don't enjoy it.

And before anyone tells me "it helps you to think quicker", for me it doesn't. I haven't gotten an iota faster at playing chess since I first started playing it.

I know that some people can enjoy blitz or bullet, but for me it's the worst type of chess. If you like it, go ahead. But leave me out of it.

Thoughts?

exactly me which is why I don't play it. when I do or even watch others play it, I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack from the stress lol

Skilled players rarely blunder in blitz though? It's fast-paced, exciting and perfect for short sessions.

Blitz is garbage. To each their own though.

I don't think I play chess (if you can call it that) to be understood ...

It's matter of condition and goals.

In some cases blitz are better than slow chess. If you need a instant collection of your leaks and weaks than blitz match with good friend or coach is excellent. And so on....

You mean bullet, as with 10 minuite chess it's okay. Blu dress more unlikely, etc.

I mean the same could be said about slow chess. The fact you find it too hard simply shows that your not very good at it. (Yes my rating is beneath yours, I know. ) frustrating? How so?

I also can't see much point in super-fast chess. But others see differently.

JustOneUSer
Stressful? I find slow chess so much more stressful.

I mean the OP goes about his opinions in a very respectful way, but those who say "blitz is garbage", would you like to provide a reason for your opinions?

Calculation sometimes feels like work though, right? I can't be the only one grin.png

Blitz is fun for me because the calculation is very fast and superficial... and it feels fun to see patterns and instantly play them (and have your opponent react to them). The best way I know how how to explain it, is it's like the difference between adding 5+5 by counting on your fingers and by just knowing it's 10 without any counting involved.

Yeah, you can only do basic math this way (i.e. only play the chess ideas you know really well and have done before), but because you're posing problems so quickly for each other it's fun.

For me...blitz is simply a way to pass the time.

Id be similar.

I don't have time for potentially hour long games, but some short ones? Fine!

I like 3 minute blitz games

I am addicted to Blitz. It is exciting. And you don't have to invest much time and energy. Also it isn't always easy to find slow chess opponents online.

I think understanding of faster paced games generally correlates with age, youngsters seem to be better at it, but I'm an old f....t and stink at it.

Thanks for the feedback everybody. I'll elaborate a bit more on some of the things I said in my first post.

People at my local chess club often challenge me to blitz games, which I always refuse. That's why I said "leave me out of it" because I don't like being challenged to blitz games by anyone.

I always tend to lose on time often as well - that's why I find blitz frustrating. I prefer to be outplayed, not to lose on time. You learn more from your losses that way. Some people just play chess slower than others. It doesn't mean that they are bad at the game though.

Just moving the pieces at the requisite speed is plenty of energy used up!

Well, for me playing a 5 minute game "by hand" is relaxing, while a 5 hours game feels more like work. I enjoy both though.
