For those people who think, that playing good chess doesn't = smart

For those people who think, that playing good chess doesn't mean you are smart , it doesn't mean anything etc....

Let me ask you something... Can you show me one good chess player who is dumb !?

Now let's me ask you one more question. .. Do you think having a great memory doesn't relates to overall intelligence !?

Human brain has individual areas that control individual functions. Chess skill, mathematical skill etc are controlled by parietal lobes whereas social dealing/good personalities are controlled by frontal lobe.

If you train too much in chess. (parietal lobe), you will likely lack social skill.(frontal lobe).

In fact, it is your choice whatever you value in your life though. 

i recall carlsen once said referring to Speelman that being too smart can be a slight detriment to chess. ( i think he meant more having a powerful inquisitive mind that wont settle for one activity more than actual brainpower)

they have been a few top 10 players who were quite good at other intellectual endeavors, although i coudnt tell you if they were experts at their craft or world class as well. taimanov was a great musician apparently.

a Genius doesnt mean a polymath. High IQ need not manifest in other areas or even at all. Chess is frequently an all consuming skill to hone.

im off the camp that does believe in a strong correlation but only when chess strength reflects some close to hypothetical peak, or some minimium. for example, it is highly unlikely to have a below average IQ and be 2400 for example. or a 2600 likely a a minimium reflects above average intellectual ability although the actual range of possibilities can be generous.

I work with a guy that went to Berkely, worked on the super collider, has a photographic memory, and he cant play chess if his life depended on it.
