Is anyone else tired of these Endless " I want to be a GM " threads ? NO you will NOT become a GM ( or a IM or NM or even a CM ). For example how many people will ever win a Pro Golf Tournament or an Olympic Medal ( Gold, Silver or Bronze ) ? The answer is that 99.99% of the people on this planet have NO Chance at all in those areas of competition !

It is true that I will never rise above patzer in chess, but I am a grandmaster of litigation and the art of pleasuring a woman.  In the Olympics, the 10 meter air rifle event has always intrigued me; it happens early on and I can shoot a gun as well as anybody here.

Oh come on,  The only reason you don't want to be a grandmaster is you'd have to go through the trouble of changing your screen name.

I can't be a GM, huh? OK, then...

I want to be a Pulitzer Prize journalist reporting on chess GMs! Do you think I can get the prize in 6 months if I apply myself?

Well, that and at my age I can't handle a swarm of young female chess groupies at my door, even with the instructions for self-defense that came with my Hai Karate cologne.

There are other endlessly repeating topics . Take " The last one is post is  ...."  as an example. Interestingly, many members here are extremely enthusiastic in response. I really can't see the point. Life is short and should be well spent on doing something more meaningful.

I served with Patrick Henry.  I knew Patrick Henry.  Patrick Henry was a friend of mine.  Troll, you're no Patrick Henry.

This is called bashing your mind. The more you say this, the more it becomes truth to you.

You need to believe in yourself before you try to tackle a challenging task, such as becoming a GM.

Sure, you may probably never become GM anyway, but you will make it much farther if you actually believe that you can be a GM.

They said that to Magnus Carlsen once.

To restate my 1st post more clearly: 99.99 % of the people on this planet have NO CHANCE at all of making it to the CM rank, never mind becoming a NM or IM or of ever reaching the elusive GM level of course !

The odds are probably 99.99 to .01 that someone claiming 99.99 percent of people fit into any category has pulled that percentage out of his ass.  But even if the claim were true, it would be a meaningless statistic since less than 10 percent of the world's population plays chess.  And I would bet the overwhelming majority of those who do are just casual players with no interest in earning a title.  Obviously people who don't play or play only casually have no chance of becoming CMs or above.  I have no chance of winning an Academy Award.  The relevant question is what percentage of serious players who work toward the goal of CM (or NM, FM, IM, GM) achieve that goal?

Well you seem to be a real genius type of person so when you become a CM please let us know if you don't mind   rofl.

I'm hardly a genius and even if I were, I wouldn't have an interest in pursuing a chess career.  I play because I like the game.  I've only played in a handful of tournaments and the last one was many years ago.  I didn't challenge your assertion because I took it personally.  I didn't.  A chess title has never been my goal.  I just pointed out that your claim that 99.99 percent of the world's population has no chance of getting a chess title, even if true, is a meaningless statistic.  It would be interesting to know what percentage of serious players who work toward that goal actually achieve it.  That would give us some idea of how difficult it is.
