Through my years of training, I have learned to appreciate the nuances of different fighting styles and I have sought to develop a form of honestly expressing one's self.
In chess, there are many Forms. Some have been used so many times that they are referred to as "Traditional". Taking the time to master these forms is not a waste of time at all. It provides you with a sound foundation for developing a strong defense or putting into action a powerful offense.
It takes time to understand the nuances of each technique and to become familiar with the ways that Grandmasters have learned to implement each technique while honing their skills.
It takes great patience as well because you will certainly lose many games to opponents as you seek to get better. However, do not get discouraged. Keep your head up and open a good chess book or practice with players of your own skill level. With each game, you will gradually get better and learn to avoid making the same mistakes time and time again.
I would be disingenuous if I were to say that time alone will enable you to become a Great chess player or even rise to the rank of a Chess Grandmaster. Like great athletes who have the innate ability or physical attributes that enable them to be great with little or less effort, so too are those who are more capable chess players. It is the way that the world works and it is something that must be accepted in order to have a honest perspective of chess.
That is not to say that those players with natural abilities cannot be beaten. It is in a sense the ability to use Forms or to remain formless that gives Chess a unique characteristic. The choice to use a particular technique or form is your own and to make changes to a technique or form is also your own decision. You are in a sense, the artist.
I guess the objective is to have fun and to learn as we all try to enjoy this great game called Chess.
To this end, we should all encourage each other to use Chess as a means of bridging gaps between cultures and making the world a better place. It is after all a game of honor, skill, and good sportsmanship.
Under the stars, we are but one family. It just so happens that we are all a little different, but we are all apart of the same human family.
