I'm not aware of a variation like that but it probably exists. Allow that and then follow castling like 960.
It would probably be best if the setup was not observable by either player but both ways would be interesting.

Is there a version of chess where you can put pieces wherever you want? Chess is an expressio n of the old style of war; is there a version of chess that allows placement of your units by each player individually?on the same side of the board, but in whatever set up you want? Curious as to if this is done.
