Frustrated 1200 player here

I have a feeling that a lot of the players in the 1100 to 1300 range just learn how to play a couple of opening traps and thats all they do. I rarely get the chance to play a solid game of chess, especially when playing black.

Im really frustrated by that and im seriously thinking about quitting online chess because its not fun. Either you know the opening trap, then you win, or you dont know it, then you lose. I dont feel that those kind of games give any room for improvement on basic chess principles, on tactics and strategy.

I dont expect a solution here (sure i could get a premium account and analyze all those games until i know the traps, but thats not what i'd aim for), but i want to encourage players in that elo-range to stop doing that and instead trying to improve on their chess skills.

thats not my point, im not anything like a "shark" (whatever that means), just want to have some fun chess games.

and im annoyed by the amount of players just going for some silly traps instead of trying to play more solid games.

i played a lot of chess like 2 years ago, then made a longer break and around 2 month ago i returned. i cant remember that it was that annoying with alle the trick openings two years ago. maybe i forgot, but in my opinion it got way worse.

Play rapid or slower, then, not blitz. If those traps are "silly" as you say, they only work because there is little time to think and you fall into them.

In any case, you cannot expect millions of players to change their approach because you invite them to play differently. Everyone plays as they like best. Maybe for others, having fun games simply means trying to win, in any way possible, taking advantage of every opportunity, even using traps.

You have to adapt, like all of us...

Chess is all about trying to trick your opponent. If you don’ get it, don’t play chess.

Tactics are pretty important it isn't just opening traps...
