Frustrations with getting back into chess

Lol, well he did say he was out of chess for awhile, I noticed his rating, after I posted, so yeah it may not apply to him, sorry. I was out of chess myself, while I wasn't his level, I still went over the basics, a lot of new info out there.

On the contrary, the main thing that I'm trying to do now is to go back to basics - haven't played or studied since February, so I'm revisiting the most important basic endgames and rereading Simple Chess by Stean. I still can't really focus too well on more complicated tactics, but I suppose that'll come back with time.

Did you have an injury, or loss FT ? You don't have to answer, especially if you feel its too personal, sometimes life can throw curveballs at us.
What excited me about chess in the beginning is still what helps me. I used to love setting up positions on the board, and just thinking of all the possibilities in it, especially complex positions. Perhaps from some of your own games, or a favorite from a championship match in a bygone era.
I think, if you can spark that initial passion you had with chess, you can catch up fast, probably even surpassing past capabilities.
However perhaps your heart isn't there. Think positive though, and keep trying, and don't ever give up, its always darkest, right before dawn, best wishes, and good luck.

Not going to get too personal, but I've had medical issues for the last while so haven't been able to play. Medicine stuff is still getting worked out which might be part of why I'm not able to hit the ground running, but I can't complain. Trying to be patient with it all and hoping I'll get it back fully (or, if I'm lucky, more than I had before because of improved health and because sometimes a break can be a good thing). It's frustrating at the moment, but if I can "shake the cobwebs out" I'll be very happy to return to tournament play and keep improving. Thank you for the good wishes.
It's a great win for an expert to beat an IM. 1 game doesn't say anything about the quality of his play though.
