gambling and chess variation

here is an idea for playing standard chess but with a financial element that would, i hope, provide some interesting games regardless of the possibility that people may choose to "cheat" by employing chess software etc...

as in poker games, both players "buy-in" for a set amount, for example, one dollar each. they each recieve 2000 "chips". at the beginning of each turn, both players bid (secretly) for the right to move a piece. bids are then declared and highest bid wins. highest bid now moves a piece. once the piece has been moved, a new turn begins and once again players bid to move a piece. it is possible for a player to win a succession of bids and so make a succession of moves while his opponent makes none.

the only exception to this is "check". if a player is put in check he must and can move. but having moved (out of check), a new turn begins and players bid etc...

when a player runs out of chips he cannot move again until his opponent also runs out of chips, at which point moves proceed as in a normal game.

the winner makes back his dollar and gets 95c from his opponent. the site keeps the other 5c.

But chess is fun because I win over my opponent in brainpower, not in luck

why call it "luck"? you must calculate the bid as carefully as the move.

That would be interesting . . . But I feel like the gambling aspect would take  precedence over the actual chess, because the entire game would be based on who can make 3 moves in a row. whoever ran out of chips first would lose, but at the same time, threats of checkmate would also make someone waste all his chips

If I want a game with betting I would just play poker.

i guess i like the idea of using skills in different ways. so adding a new element to ones chess skills seems ok. also, i m not sure if i d call it "betting" because the outcome would be entirely determined by ability not chance.
