You're assuming that Magnus is still the best player in the world.   Kramnik, So, Aronian, Caruana and Mamedyarov are right on his @$$, as far as ratings go.   I would put Kasparov in that group too.

The oldest active player over 2700 is 48. Kasparov is 54 and has been retired for over 10 years. You're thinking of Kasparov the legend, not Kasparov the man.

As far as Carlsen, yes, people are right on his @$$ and all it takes is for them to have career best performances and Carlsen to have the worst results he's had in many years... and he's still higher rated.

I don't know if you've checked the ratings lately, but he's like one loss away from being knocked off the top, in classical chess.   He's only 10 points ahead of Kramnik, 12 ahead of So and 15 ahead of Caruana.   Also, So and Caruana are both younger than Carslen.   It could happen sooner than you think.   I expect Wei Yi to pass him up eventually too.   He's only 18 years old and is only 70 points behind Carslen now.

The highest rated person in classical chess is also the highest rated person in rapid and blitz chess and the reigning world champion in classical chess.

He's unquestionably the best player in the world. Right now, his competition is closing in on him, but they haven't caught him.

We don't know whether the peloton will reel in the leader or if the leader has an extra gear. I rather suspect Carlsen has extra gears.

Maybe so.  Carlsen does have quite a large lead in the rapid and blitz ratings.   I'm very curious to see where Kasparov falls, in the grand scheme of things though.   I expect around 4th or 5th in the world in rapid and 5th in blitz.   Just a guess.   He's already proven that he can beat Nakamura.

There's something wrong with your prediction thingy.

For instance getting the number of wins in blitz right gives 30 points.

So, let's say someone says 45. Now the real number is 44. He/she gets 0 points? That's silly.

You should have a system like 1 away is 29, 2 away is 28 points or something like that to get a more fair competition.

good luck.

AFAIK, it works like you suggest wink.png (the player in your example doesn't get zero points, but less than 30 - the closer to 44 the answer is, the more points the player gets)

Hi!

Thank you for your question.

Actually I'm taking into account absolute "distance" from the correct score. For example:

If the correct number of wins equals 40 and two different members predict 35 and 45, they'll both get maximum score - "5".

|40-35| = | 5| = 5
|40-45| = |-5| = 5

So, if it's worth 30 pts, they both get 30-5 = 25 pts

Hope that explains my system Smile Also, HERE is the prediction thread for all major tournaments, if you're interested :) Currently, predictions for Dortmund are open until tomorrow's 1st round.

Navara is considered to be the weakie in the field, but he just won the rapid event in Biel after beating Hou, Morozevich and Harikrishna.

None of which are, according to 2700chess, rated over 2700 in rapid.

No, even if Moro still knows how to play rapid when in decent form:

Well, no doubt Morozevich is still a great player, but this we are talking completely different levels here. I believe Navara is still the clear underdog.

He certainly is a very clear underdog, and that says a bit about how strong the field is. Navara could have won Dortmund without that being much of a surprise compared to Wojtaszek winning ahead of Fedoseev. This tournament looks very strong.

Hi All,

Is Garry coming out of retirement just for this tournament or would he continue competing after the tournament as well (like the other GMs) ?

Cheers..!

Just for this tournament I think

Kasparov is a huge backer of the Grand Chess Tour, so it wouldn't be surprising if he played more GCT rapid and blitz if he has a reasonable result.

I think the GCT is great for chess. Check out the online coverage if you haven't ever seen it.

I also stumbled on to you can get prior years GCT souvenir stuff 75% off online at the World Chess Hall of Fame related to the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis where these next GCT events are playing. Should be really interesting chess.

Kasparov said before that he doesn't have the stamina to compete in classical time controls, but he can still make a mark in rapid and blitz.

Kasparov has never been one to underestimate himself. I expect he will pick and choose a few rapid events like St. Louis, but he won't be competing for the Grand Prize in the tour. Btw, Carlsen has it almost wrapped up after winning the first two.
