How do you think Fabiano Caruana can prepare against Magnus? What advice would you give him?

Us giving him advice? Should it be the other way around?

Lol.

Honestly, though, if he plays as well as he always plays, he’ll do well and have a shot. He doesn’t need advice.

That level of play is unknown to us.

Particularly world championship matches.

Particularly these days... since everyone has the same engines and databases, you can't afford to specialize in sharp openings anymore. You have to be able to play lots of stuff.

Of course he'll work to make his opening knowledge as good as it can be... but I assume mostly he'll want to make sure he's in top form.

But again, this is an assumption from someone who knows nothing about modern day world champion preparation tongue.png

What do you think he should improve on?

Such an unanswerable question tongue.png

But ok, you're trying to get an idea of what really strong players do.

Strong players will analyze difficult positions. Tactics, sure, but also endgames, or middlegames, etc.

Sometimes it's a composed problem and the point is e.g. deep calculation. Lines will look bad until you find that one trick move 10 moves deep that brings it all together.

Sometimes it's a wild tactical position and the point is calculating small variations but for a very wide range of moves.

Sometimes it's a nebulous endgame where calculation is useless and the point is you have to find the right plan.

Stuff like that.

Fabi will be more motivated than Maggie because its Fabis first title match whereas its Maggies 4th. Maggie's been there, done that, had to get it dry cleaned.

You can say the same in reverse.

Carlsen has a personal attachment to the title. When a challenger comes to take it away, he's going to fight for it.

And at least in the old days they'd play training games.

They'd find some young strong GM that was good at ____ and bring them in and play some games.

Practice scholar's mate. It's been so long ago, perhaps he forgot about it...

Play only gambits. WC 2016 was boring

Get as healthy as possible.  Never be the first to offer a draw.  Be expressionless.

Caruana needs to find a training partner who will push him mercilessly. Fortunately, there are at least three other American GMs who are +2700 to help. Unfortunately, they don't seem to get along very well with one another.
