Wow! Took me by surprise to see the "Cleveland Indians", icon. Thats my team all theses years. Still waiting for them to win world series! Do not know if you remember Larry Doby, Early Winn, Bob Feller, back in the good old days when baseball ruled.
Sportsmanship... or lack there of...

Baseball has never ruled. America hasn't even ruled. You don't even have a king or queen. What kind of empire is that?

It's not unsportsmanlike, it's just a bit rude.
It's also typical of the more impersonal nature of interactions on the Internet. The same person who logs off without a word, and never even acknowledges your "hello," would probably greet you with a handshake and a smile if you were to encounter each other over the board. I would prefer a friendlier atmosphere on the Internet, but I've learned not to take things personally.
I like friendly atmosphere, prefer to mix with friendly member however like you typed "typical of the more impersonal nature of interactions on the Internet" :> for me, sometime try to be friendly also send wrong signal?

I usually say hi or the like as the game begins. I also usually don't get any reply. Then at the end of the game, I'll drop a tftg (thanks for the game) to which I still won't get any reply. I've just taken it like paulgottlieb above, I don't take it personally. I might start playing some games against the computer, though. Really no reason not to I suppose.

What is this misconception that Scots are alcoholics? Alcoholics as I understand it are people who stop drinking and go to meetings. Scots never stop. Wait, am I making a point or a fool of myself?

Thanks for the input. People probably don't mean to come off as unsportsman0like, they just forget there is a chat window sometimes I think. That's the purpose of this thread; inform those who have smaller brains and can't chat and play at the same time.

@Chiefwahoo, I share your concerns and I admit I haven`t got used to it yet for "Hello, have a good game" when the game starts and "Thanks for the game" (+ congratulations! when I lose) when the game is over (or something similar) is a must to me. I even have statistics showing that players with a certain flag seem to ignore etiquette more than others. I reckon it wouldn`t be fair and polite to say who they are - and a player doesn`t have to be from a country whose flag they use (I am from the Czech Republic and have never been to Bahrain) But I think I can name the good guys - players with the Scottish and Australian flags.

Here's my take on this: We, as people on earth have a right to say something or not say something. Whether it's good sportmanship or whatever, I think it's up to the person to deem it neccessary. End of story.
What if it wasn't a good game? A bit arrogant to think that all of your games are good.
