Play the way you normally play. Its the same if you're playing a titled player.

keep things simple and they will self destruct

Just make the best moves you can find.

general strategy?  no mercy.  smash em until they quit, mentally and emotionally.

By no means I wanted to play hope chess, of course. But should I rather try to create complications or play quietly and not letting them attack? Or in other words should I rather rely on my superior positional understanding or tactical abilities?

Btw, I want to play for a win in every game. I am leading a local (very small) tournament with 5/5, two rounds to go, and I want to maintain my perfect score. That being said, I fear draws.^^

well how do you normally play (as in against people of your strength)

Do that and you should be fine, don't force yourself to do something you're not good at.

I play the board, not the rating.

Be sure to keep playing in your comfort zone. Don't suddenly play like a super agressive player while normally you play solid and wait for them to blunder, only because your rating is higher.

But I wonder if this is true on my level, being rated around 1500 myself where one still lacks a deep positional understanding.

 I found this quite ironic.

I used to play in tournaments years ago that weren't broken down in classes so a master could end up playing a Class D player.  I had the opportunity to play and lose to a master once.

To the point.  I overheard a couple of experts discussing their strategy against the lower ranked players and one of them said that he just "walks down the center of the board."  I'm sure most lower ranked players have no idea how important the center is or how to play it.

The only difference it should really make is what opening to choose.  At sub  2000 level I would think when facing a lower rated opponent it would be wise to go with something more double edged, like the sicilian, whereas when I face higher rated players I usually go with the caro kann (not so much because you have to choose a very solid chose vs higher rated players, but because in all liklihood they know the sicilian better than me and since I play the caro kann frequently I have good chances of equalising).

Apart from that, just play the game.

Kind of funny, against higher rated Opposition I tend to go for the Uber Sharp games I love, KG's, the More agressive Sicillians (when as white), If Im feeling crazy I might go with an Evans Gambit, or something principaled vs the two knights.

Against lower rated I'll probably go with the Spanish Game or something along those lines

as Black, I'm working on practicing my open games, but I might play a sicillian if the mood strikes me against higher rated competition.
