Gentleman?

I will poke fun and try and prove my point. Can you imagine a gentlemen at this level (your opponent) sitting at a physical table refusing to say a word or even look you in the eye after a defeat? He would look silly. What about if he had won? He would look silly then to me also.

I saw the Russian chess champion stoic once on Television, and noticed that he had body guards. You may even ask if your opponent has men hidden close by to protect his interests! Ha ha I joke only because I have read that chess skill does not mean that an individual will have the same level of skill in other areas of mental perception. (The Invisible Gorilla)

But the world champion does have interests (such as fans), and that draws enemies also.

Just so you guys know... If I ever don't respond to a hello or good game, It's because I don't have my chat pulled up.  Sometimes I keep the screen setting so big that the chat doesn't even show up.

I need to focus all my attention to the game, somtimes I don't notice chat, that being said, I try to acknowledge a greeting, although I won't greet first. As a side note to not noticing the chat box, I've rejected draw offers because I kept moving pieces, not noticing the offer..maybe if I knew how to play chess, I could play and chit chat at the same time.

Are you sure "half the clowns" all speak english (or read it)?

Are you also sure they all have a chat window open and are looking at it?

If you want courtesy, try reading Ms Manners http://www.missmanners.com/

Maybe she can politely express more sympathy for your dilemma than a crude, coarse and crass cad such as myself

live chess or online chess doesn't make any difference. I've played 60+ moves games in online chess and never seen any reply

Give your opponent a break. He's playing on his iphone and it's illegal to text while driving, at least in California.

it's illegal to text while driving, but it's OK to play chess while driving?

Avatar of oinquarki

Well, yeah; Texting takes focus and distracts you from the road - chess doesn't.

I think the live-play facility should be divided into two areas: the first for those who have mastered the art of hello, and the second for those who haven't.

The first room will have tasteful background music, scented candles, tea, biscuits, and fine wine.

The second room will have overflowed toilets, rats knawing on discarded housepet carcasses, Lego pieces that don't fit together, and non-stop lectures by Cultural Studies doctoral candidates.

what language is that. like i here in restaraunts everywhere. even MacDonalds....Do you wear flappy shoes??? too?

It is a simple gesture when people play chess, and a nice thing   This is the point to be nice when you start a game.

It is mean not to say hi back of course; but considering it's the internet it isn't something to get all worked up about -- it's easy to overlook when there's no sound and just a small line of text; since contact is indirect anyway, people focused on their game may be less motivated; but people shouldn't be judged by how they act on the internet (as long as it's reasonable -- the topic posted here is certainly no crime); people act differently here in the online world.

No The Grobe, I do not think that the server should place an automtic Hello for me or you. . . for I will never know whther the opponet was enough of a social person or not. . . and I will feel like a fool.

I always place a Hello and a short salute phrse. If he/she answers. . .Ok If not, when I finish the game, no matter who is the winner I do not write anything more even if I received a note (or goodie) from him/her. (Incidentally if it is a "she" I always send her flowers, no matter wnether she chats or not.)

Once, a guy seemed to me so antisocial that at the end (I won) I recomended him to go to school ad learn some education. . . later he challenged me three times ans I rejected three times. . .with no explanation al all.

Avatar of Elubas

I'm pretty sure he was joking.

And seriously? Flowers? For an internet game? Come on! Laughing
