Yes theoretically u can become a gm even without any coahing but remember that with the help of a good coach u will be able to save urself much despair and also save time.

NO...You cannot become an inatimate object.  Grand Master is a title.  You cant become a Grand Master, you achieve the GM title.

Play a game with me. If you can beat me within 40 moves, you have chance of becoming GM

HorsesGalore

we all use "coaches".     Do you have to pay them ?    That's up to you if you hire one.

Keep in mind most good chess players go over their games with their opponents afterwards.    when your opponent shares what they were thinking and their thought processes, isn't that also "coaching" ?

One great way to improve is playing in strong chess clubs and seeking out competitive players that you can use as training partners, sharing your thoughts with.

No one becomes a grandmaster in a vacuum.

I am a 20 year old female, 275 lbs., have never played soccer until last week, but I LOVE it!

How long will it take for me to make the U.S. National team?

275 lbs? you don't look overweight in your picture.

I don't know what it is about chess novices.  I don't know any other activity where near beginners think they can easily rise to the standard of the world's elite.  There is nothing wrong with being ambitious, but on this site it is very annoying to experienced players to see newbie after newbie announcing that they are a genius and plan to be GMs in 3 or 4 years.

Well you have not done that.  You've asked a straightforward question so I'll give you a straightforward and (I hope) helpful response. I don't know the answer to your question, but I hope what I have to say will be useful.

You are still young enough to achieve great things in life, but at your age some people are already GMs, or well on their way.  Whether your present strength is impressive or not depends on how long you have been playing and how seriously you have worked at the game.

There is nothing wrong with having the plan to become a GM at the back of your mind, but it is much more important to play some serious chess (NOT on-line Blitz and Bullet), analyse your games to figure out what you most need to learn and what recurring mistakes you make that need to be eliminated.  As for goals a 2500 rating is so far away that at your present level you can have absolutely no idea of what it means.  Your next goal should be something that you understand, such as a 100-point rating increase.

Just take a step at a time.

Is your picture a part of the sarcasm too? Are you sure you're not some bald guy in his 40's?

Here's a perfect match of your image - http://calvinscanadiancaveofcool.blogspot.in/2013/04/tumblr-girls-of-week.html

This is where we recall Erik's epic post from https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/new-player-here?page=1

Step 1: Open laptop.

Step 2: Browse reddit.

Step 3: Feel bored.

Step 4: Get out of bed and tell your mom to make you breakfast.

Step 5: Google "pretty girl face".

Step 6: Create Chess.com account with picture.

Step 7: Post "I'm new here!"

Step 8: Walk down the hall, move old pizza box, and rub your stubbly chin at how genius you are.

Step 9: Hit refresh waiting for someone to message you.

Step 10: Feel sadness.

By the way, nice description on your profile page. Did you get any messages yet?

My rule of thumb is this: anybody doltish and ignorant enough to ask on the forum how long it will take him to become a GM stands no chance of ever becoming a GM.
nimzomalaysian

Yeah, it's become a trend. More like a meme.

Ziggy_Zugzwang

I'm fat, bald and in my fifties. I don't have a picture of a beautiful woman as my avatar. Can I still become a GM ?

Ziggy_Zugzwang

I don't think you are taking this thread seriously...

Excellent point.  It is obviously true for a fully grown adult that is deluded enough to think that after playing chess semi-seriously for 10 years and having achieved the dizzy heights of  a 1450 rating that they have more than a snowflake in hell's chance of cracking 2200, never mind becoming a GM.

But is it fair to apply the same rule of thumb to an immature teenager?

This is a serious question. What do you think urk?

LOL...that is not a match at all! Anyway, what the hell is wrong with an overweight girl wishing she were thin?

YOUR image is Tom Cruise!!! Does that mean that you are Tom Cruise or pretending to be Tom Cruise??

 Judgemental hypocritical prick!
