maybe he was telling you that he was enjoying the game a lot up til your blunder and it was sad that it pretty much meant game over.

But surely preferable to presume the best of chess players?
The vast majority I've played over the years are polite and friendly and interested in chess.
If it was Counterstrike, then sure, I'd be extrapolating an entirely different interpretation. 
However, of course I accept the internet is what it is.
I hate getting a "Good game" after I've hung my Queen and resigned.
