I've never heard of Mattison, but GM Bernstein is quite famous I think. I'm fairly certain he was a GM. He may have been a WC contender.

Yes, I believe she was. I must say that I'd never encountered even the gave vs. Reti.

Herman (Hermanis) Karl (Karlovich) Mattison (Matisons) was the first really strong Latvian player. He was born in 1894  and died in 1932 from tuberculosis at age 37. He was considered world champion material, but probably due to his short career, his name in mostly forgotten.
