I already gave a hint.  But  here are more.  The date of the photo which is 1868.  The man was a chess player, but although he never reached any great heights as such, he is known for elevating chess to an art.  His brother was also a chess player.

He was born in Philadelphia but mostly lived in New York; he lost a game to Morphy at Queen odds when he was 16 (and Morphy was 20).
