The gentleman was/is very famous.  The lady who wasn't/isn't famous at all is Mrs.Boyd.  This has turned into a puzzler in more ways than one.

I already gave a hint.  But  here are more.  The date of the photo which is 1868.  The man was a chess player, but although he never reached any great heights as such, he is known for elevating chess to an art.  His brother was also a chess player.
