It seems to be a living chess game, possibly in St. Petersburg, Russia, in the early 20th century.

owlyboly

Absolutely right !

The black team in a game of human chess being played between Ilya Rabinovich and Pyotr Romanovsky using members of the Red Army and Soviet Navy on Uritsky Square in Leningrad, June 20, 1924.

When you enter it directly there is no or only a little text .

Better enter it through TUMBLR >>> Tumblr >>> search ' chess ' >>> And here find  and click on the photo Levenfish - Botvinick , which is part from the same Russian blog . Entering this way gives you English text to every picture .

batgirl

Oh, ok. Thanks for the tip.

This may not be the best forum for this, but it IS about chess and it IS a picture I got from some book a long time ago. Which book I can't recall,  but I thought it was kind of neat.

AndyClifton

I suspect it was from one of the Complete Chess Addict books (if I'm remembering right)...

batgirl

Quite possibly, but I can't be sure.

AndyClifton

Both the diagram and the writing style are reminiscent of those guys.

And yes, there can be little doubt why I liked those books so much. Smile

Well, the author of the problem was undoubtedly Joseph Ney Babson, but I just found that member crosspinner published some insight to it HERE on chess.com, saying: "Composed by J.N. Babson for Bretano's Chess Monthly in 1882.  Mate on the 1220th move, after compelling Black to make three successive and complete Knight's tours!  This is from The Fireside Book of Chess.  Page88."
