Has a king move ever delivered checkmate (in a serious game?)

I remember in an old game where white castled to mate but don't remember who played in it.

I'm sure others have happened, it would have to be a discovered check.

Bound to be a few around.

unfortunately no, a king cannot deliver a checkmate, all they can do is get out of the way and let some other piece do it or support a check mating piece, or checkmate with a rook by castling.

I dunno, the final move in the last game was 9.Kxg7 checkmate.  Smile

that was the move not the piece that mated the other king, gotta see the subtleties of the situation.

And don't forget that well known 9 move Classic !!!

The funny thing is that black has mate in 1, that they dont take to allow this mate.
When black goes bishop g7 (the last black move), they could instead go Bishop takes e4 (bxe4#)

Good question! And there you go. A well known instance of a king move delivering checkmate, and I don't think many of us here would consider Lasker an idiot. Personally when I first saw this I thought delivering mate with 0-0-0 (queenside castling) was more elegant and aesthetically pleasing, but who am I to be quibbling with Lasker? Nice queen sacrifice as well. Enjoy, Ubzugabir.

i don't think it works

It can happen quite easily. It's called a discovered attack.

Why is this forum at top list means recently added it was created 4yrs ago???

The basic problem with the question is that Super GMs almost always resign before mate is on the board. Finding any games where any mate is delivered on the board is difficult.

Amazing! Although I wish he played O-O-O, rarely has castling become mate (although castling is a king and rook move, but chess.com adds the possible moves represented by dots and castling is a king move).

Is this not the morphy king hunt game? did I get the games mixed up?

Post 5 that showed the Lasker vs Thomas game was the exact game I was thinking of when I first saw the title of this.

So yeah, there's obviously king moves leaving a discovered checkmate.
