Maybe people wont connect the name magnus carlsen to chess, but if you ask them to mention one chess player they will say Magnus and if you ask for a second they will say anand.
I think he was too busy living his own life and presuing his own interests to be bothered with chess news. Interesting guy, and I wish I could have talked with him longer than I was able to.
