Has Chess.com ever had a worse idea than Vacations?

Or better yet, how about if a person taking vacation does not reset their clock. Like, I had 4 days left when i went on vacation, I have four days left when I come back? Would the entire universe collapse if chess.com set it up that way?
I'm quite certain it does work that way. In the past, when I went on vacation for a week and let my auto-timeout protection kick in, I got an e-mail saying "You have 8 hours left in one of your games! Your vacation has kicked in. You have X days of vacation left." Then when I came home and turned off my Vacation, I had 8 hours left in that game, 10 hours in another game, etc. My turn timers were definitely not reset.

One can use a player's game record to see how their average move time looks, but people do need time for other duties in life. Taking the shortest response time seems to work out. . . . . But, given my own interests, I can't run more than two or three games anyway. Maybe 'vacation time' requests should allow an opponent to 'abort' without penalty.

Maybe 'vacation time' requests should allow an opponent to 'abort' without penalty.
That's absurd. Again, if you aren't prepared for a game to take at least 80xD days to play (where D is Days/Move), then don't agree to play the game! That means that for an average 3Days/Move game, you shouldn't expect it to end before 240 days, which translates to roughly 8 months.

Maybe 'vacation time' requests should allow an opponent to 'abort' without penalty.
This would actually encourage abuse of another kind :
"oh yes, you have one more queen in that endgame, but I can make it last a good 30 moves before checkmate, so I will take my full X days for each and hope you need to get on vacation - in which case I abort ! yes !"

Greqt idea!!
When the current tournament I'm in ends in another 2 years, remind me of that!
LOL
Ok, and I am stuck in some "no vacation" tournaments, because when I first signed on I didn't really think it through. So even when I take a vacation, there are still some games to keep track of.
So, in a year or so, after that tournament finally runs out, remind me to never ever again enter a "no vacation" tournament.
Deal?
"LOL"

problem with that is I am only allowed one tournament.
So I cannot enter another tournament until 1-3 years. (When my last remaining opponent makes his next move.)
Unless I withdraw from this tournament. In which case he will win, and tell all his troll buddies to abuse the vacation time, to save a losing postion, and they will all start doing it.
actually you can join other tournaments as a free member too... it's worked before for me..

Perhaps vacation time is fine but just make sure the chess.com people make them ge onlya week of vacation every month or somthing

That's insane. Why would people not be allowed to go on vacation for more than one week at a time?

So your saying he can wait 1-3 years? Great Idea!

I don't understand what you mean. You suggested that people only be able to use one week of vacation per month. I pointed out that it means that no one playing Chess online would be able to ever take a vacation that lasted longer than a week.
What does that have to do with waiting 1-3 years?

Why not have patience? I have had games that went for 2.5 years before they were completed. Right now I am in a tournament that was started back in November of 2009. You guys can wait.

I have no problems with vacations, but that does not mean vacation abuse does not exist.
Vacation, by any defenition, is a fairly major event. It's not something that happens 3 or 4 times per week, or even multiple times per day, in some cases.
Maybe vacation should be limited to 2 instances per month. It should bw used for real vacations, or unexpected RL crises, not for putting games on hold because you don't feel like playing a game you agreed to.
If you have more than 2 crises per month, maybe give up chess for a while and sort out your life.
Nonsense. I don't live next to my computer. I take vacations as needed, sometimes several times a month.
I will take two vacations this upcoming week. Sunday through Tueusday (for a Colonoscopy on Monday), then playing again Wednesday through Thursday, then another vacation over the weekend as I enter a 3 day long OTB chess tournament.
I won't even enter any more chess tournaments that do not allow vacations, I learned my lesson last year when I had to travel for a week with no internet connectivity and lost a pile of games.
You guys have the option to enter "no vacation" tournaments; enter them.
And no, you are not limited to "1 tournament", you can enter as many as you like. For example, I am in about 7 right now. So this is factually incorrect.
The only people this might apply to are people who play for free, and they of course do not have a right to complain. Complaining is for paying members that are supporting your ability to play on this site at all.
While free members don't give chess.com money, they still have to see ads (the ad services pay chess.com).
As a person new to tournaments, I entered my first one, I think it was november of last year. I wish someone would've told me to enter a No-Vacation tournament. I'm still waiting for some guy to come back from vacation. Until then, I can't enter another one...

And, from the other side, i wish someone had told me to enter vacation tournaments, because I still have a couple no vacation ones, which means when I go on vacation I still have games I have to play.
So, hopefully, we both learned our lesson. You will only enter no vacation tournaments, and I will only enter vacation ones. Isnt it nice chess.com offers this choice?

They did tell you, there's a full warning page you have to click through to enter no vacation tournaments.
No such warning for other tourneys, that you may be stuck in this thing forever/

Yes, but no one told me it was a really bad idea to join tournaments that don't allow vacation time to be used.

I think vacation is a fine thing if you are indeed on vacation.
Auto vacation is bad cause if you are not on vacation your time should simply run out.
IMO vacation should always actively be set by the player.
