Has Magnus Carlsen changed?

I've never had any doubt that he's the GOAT. Not necessarily the most talented, because what if Fischer or Kasparov spent whole lives with modern theory and super engines? But that's another topic.

Some years ago my impression of Magnus was that he was arrogant, abrasive, and had a royalty complex. But in recent months he's grown on me. I watch a fair amount of chess, and I've been seeing a lot of dry, witty humor, and a more down-to-earth human side of him.

So has he changed, or was my original impression wrong?

Both could be true.

I agree with justbefair.

Perhaps he is a multifaceted human being who has both pleasant and unpleasant qualities which you can’t sum up based on the very brief snapshots of his life available to the public eye?

It’s not necessary for his personality to have changed in any drastic manner, just that he has shown another side of himself as of late.

This is a really good take. That's fair.

I think he has mellowed with age.  What concerns me is his walk.  He walks like an old man now.  No idea if its due to injury, or what.

This is how a lot of popular people are when they first get big, then they chill out after a while

I think he's just matured a bit now and being world champ for a few years already at 30 has made him approach chess and being a chess player in a very pragmatic way. Same with Nakamura, they were both arrogant in their early-mid 20s but later became more humble.

Also, it's worth noting that Carlsen gradually got more attuned to the social and cultural pressures and expectations of being the champ and may have changed his personality (or at least what he shows to the cameras) to be a better ambassador of the game.

He was young, now he is a  mature man.
Travels and games arround the world made him change.
He has a girlfriend, Elisabet Lorentzen Djønne (pic below)
(I can't find a good source about if he is married or no)

Sorry!
Source I saw is not conclusive.
All sources say he has a girlfriend, not a wife.

Sorry, I made a mistake. Post was already corrected.

I'm married with chess.

he says!
