Have a Mint with your chess!

A while back I mentioned that it would be better for all chess players to use a Linux based OS rather than Windows because Windows is not stable enough and we chess players want to make sure our computers don't crash and destroy our valuable chess games and databases. I suggested we all switch over to Linux Ubuntu because it is freely available and easy to use and  there is a large community base if we should happen to need help. Since that time I have been experimenting with Linux Mint and I am now suggesting it is better to use Mint because Mint is even easier to use than Ubuntu and is nicer looking and since it is a fork of Ubuntu most of the instructions available for Ubuntu will also work with Mint and their is also additional literature dedicated exclusively for Mint. Mint looks a bit like Windows XP which was fairly stable and worked well. I liked XP and still have it on a old laptop just in case I need it. But since Micro$oft had a good product they, of course, had to improve it, resulting in the junky OS's they are pushing today. With the use of another program called Wine we can run our legacy chess programs, for instance my favorite program is Lucas Chess which works fine on Mint when opened with Wine. Scid is native to Linux and can be downloaded from the Mint repository without any problems.   So let's all have a mint with our chess and a nice glass of wine!

I also use Linux, but some of my windows programs won't install under wine, and there are usability issues.

If you can't get a windows program to work in wine, look through the repository and maybe you can find something that works just as well if  not better. AlsoI suggest you contact someone in one of the Linux forums. I'm sure they will be able to help you. As for usability I have found that Mint is even more usable than Ubuntu but again try reaching out to someone in the Linux community. Sometimes just Googling a problem will get you the information you need.

What I meant about usability is that some of the programs don't run as it should under wine, some features are not working. I know how to use Linux very well.

Try looking through the available Linux software and you may find something that works just as well. Also try contacting someone in the forums or even a presenter on YouTube. There's a website call Easy Linux that I find helpful, the staff on chess.com won't let me post the url but you can google it.

You could try my new Linux Chess GUI. It is free, has most the basic functionality and runs on Ubuntu, Debian, with a Pi version too. It supports UCI and Xboard , looks relatively nice and has enough for most basic users. It is called StingRay...

Works best on Ubuntu 14!6 or Raspberry Pi. I have not tried it on Mint though so not sure how it looks on that.
