Coming back to the game after many years of not playing.  Was always fairly good but never really brushed up on the tactical side (learning lots of strategies, openings, defences etc) and was always more play it how i see it.  Now that im looking to play again I want to start to "learn" properly.  With a million and one tactics, strategies, starting, middle end game theories out there - What should i get a handle on first?  Have got a copy of Fritz 11 which im told should help and also "Modern Chess Openings by Nick de Firmian" - any advice more than welcome as you can see by my games I play slightly randomly and probably too agressive - which I dont mind to be honest but i think that will get found out when i try to start getting better.

Good books that explain tactics and provide many examples:

  • Winning Chess Tactics by Yasser Seirawan
  • Back to Basics: Tactics by Heisman

Good pools of repeatable tactical positions once you learn the above:

  • Polgar's 5334
  • Reinfeld's 1001
  • Personal Chess Trainer (software)
  • Chess Tactics for Beginners (software)

Also, you mentioned learning strategies and openings. Did you learn any endings? There are some endgame tutorials on www.chesskids.com that might be fairly useful.  :)

Go to chessgames.com and search games of the great players such as Bronstein, Tal, Fischer etc. This is a free site for this, if you like it you can subscribe for the endings and openings ($25USD/year).

Great thanks - had a quick look on google earlier and was a touch overwhelmed with how many books there was out there.  The above will help point me in the right directions.
