"... for those that want to be as good as they can be, they'll have to work hard.
Play opponents who are better than you … Learn basic endgames. Create a simple opening repertoire (understanding the moves are far more important than memorizing them). Study tactics. And pick up tons of patterns. That’s the drumbeat of success. ..." - IM Jeremy Silman (December 27, 2018)

"... In order to maximize the benefits of [theory and practice], these two should be approached in a balanced manner. ... Play as many slow games (60 5 or preferably slower) as possible, ... Slow down. You don’t need chess books yet, they won’t help. At your rating, you are simply moving your pieces almost randomly. Don’t play bullet. Play games that are at least 10 minutes or longer so that you spend enough time on a move to see that you are about to put a piece where it can be taken without you being able to take it back (called “hanging” a piece).

I'm sure a lotta people will say this is lame,. but what helped me a lot was I set the search to match me with people that were rated from -400 to +25 , I know everyone says to play people who are better than you but it greatly helped my get my shit together by playing weaker players , it gives you a chance to work out attack patterns and learn what does and doesn't work and if you make a mistake you are not slaughtered right away and maybe able to recover from it. Personally I don't find that I learn a lot when I am under intense attack and kept on the run, need to turn it down to lower the stress level n make it fun, when you find you are winning the majority of the games then it's time to raise your search parameters up a bit.

krazykat1975

Try playing a few unrated games, that way, your ELO won't go down any further, and you can find a few comfortable openings that work for you. ( You'll be surprised how much stress you relieve when your rating isn't on the line.) Learn how to use your pieces to not only attack and defend your king, but to block, also. Try to keep your bishops if at all possible. More then anything, make sure your king is safe before you go and try to proceed with your plan. Remember: You don't ever want to fall for your opponents plan, they fall for YOUR plan! Good luck.

1. Change your status from

I am Diana of Themyscira and you can't defeat me

To something else.

2. Get a brain transplant.  Consensus is that anyone asking for help on chess.com doesn't improve.

3. You're welcome

I was in the same boat as you,not too long ago. Here's what I did to get to a somewhat decent understanding of the game.

First off(and this really,"really" was superb) I thoroughly read "The Complete Idiot's Guide To Chess".

This is a fantastic book, for those wishing to get a grip on the game, when starting out....Fun too.

I joined this site as a paying member, which gave me access to the learning materials and I LOVE doing the tactics trainer....Great stuff here.

I watch You-Tube videos, mostly by John Bartholomew(great instruction for folks like us...especially his "Climbing The Ratings Ladder" videos).

I play in a friendly chess club every ow and then....I should/will do this a lot more down the road.

Most importantly......I don't worry about my rating! I like to experiment with much of the stuff I have learned and like to try out various tactical motifs.

I view this as something I am relatively serious about, but mostly as a hobby, which is fun.

The "fun" part should be emphasized!

Good luck.-happy.png

I started off really bad, but then I started playing against the computer. Find a level that you can comfortably beat, then try playing the computer one level up. Keep doing this until you get quite good. Good luck!

Just saw this

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/do-you-know-how-to-beat-magnus-carlsen-cause-i-do

Just keep beating Carlsen and you'll be fine.

ANOK1

peaks and troughs op  but to rise  look at how you lost , if possible when going over lost games flip the board see the board from the opponents point of view , spot how they attacked you and how it led to your loss

but never despair as every chess player loses , unless they are using assistance , and even then thats still not a guaranteed win ,

a motto i hold close is

"no one loses at chess if they learn from the game"

so use the resources available on this site , you have an archive of your games to study , you also have a free cc analysis of your game , this by a chess engine that can point to improvements you can make , also you may notice others here pointing to chess literature to help you improve

see this as your challenge although every chess player faces the ame challenge , good luck and good chess to you as you grow in the love of the game

Just play more man. Chess is 60% experience, 40% preparation and 10% intelligence, imo.

You tell them, Coffee! What do they think this is, 1989? If books were in, bookstores would still be around.

krazykat1975

Books are helpful, just be careful. They have pages. You read them. You turn them. They have writing on both sides. They used to be popular. Still helpful.

He has a computer. Why on earth would he go scouring around for some dusty, musty old book? He has unlimited access to any improvement material or information at his fingertips. Get with the times! It's 2020...

Hay don't but others down now you will not be able to do some stuff that you could have done.

Was that suppose to make sense or sense of humor?
