How about the Panov-Botvinnik Attack against the Caro-Kann? You don't have any Caro-Kann variations, and it's a very popular opening. Or one of the more standard Caro-Kann variations would be interesting too.
Help me decide on 15 openings for my Rybka vs Houdini tournament

Which of these is more popular? Caro-Kann, Dutch, Pirc, Evans Gambit, QGA, Scotch?
What about a closed Sicilian (as a replacement to one of the other 3)?

Pick Caro Kann, Dutch, and QGA out of those 3.
How bout a KID Bayonet Attack in there too and Najdorf, Topalov Variation (f3 h5 one since its rising in popularity nowadays)

Hi there. I was hoping you would play the pincer attack, created by the famous youtube video maker jrobichess. Since this is a new opening, I believe the engines will not know the best moves to play in the opening as in the sicilian or ruy lopez. Look at some videos on youtube if you are unfamiliar with the opening.
Alos, I've experimented with this opening. I looked at how humans play it and how engines play it. In my experience the humans are way better.
Please try it out. If you are going to use it, try to get set up the pincer position or the engine will sidetrack because it doesn't like this opening.
the pincer isn't new and it's even been refuted yet people will play it against computers since they don't yet know how to refute it.

Hey, there. Thanks for your input. I will not include the Pincer in the G/12-hours match, but I will include it in my 100-game match between Deep Rybka 4.1 and Houdini 1.5a.

If you don't mind me asking why did you chose aa 100game match even when engine tester test out engine or are trying to figure there style or what opening book fits them best etc... 30 games is always the max. I'm not saying this to be but I'm actually very interested in the idea myself thank you.

If you don't mind me asking why did you chose aa 100game match ...
I chose 100 games because there are more than 30 openings I wanted them to battle over. I'm not trying to figure out their style; I'm trying to enjoy watching some good chess.

sounds great I was just curious .

Hey, could you go over the Mestel variation of the forms gambit? that would be very good :))
Never heard of it and perhaps neithier has he coukd you post a diagram.

so,ivoryknight71 when and where can we see ur 24 hr games???:)
hey, deepak, thanks for asking. they will be on the Westport Chess Club website; I just have not created the page yet. I still need to finish the 100-game match anyway. I will definitely let everyone here on chess.com know when I start the 24-hr match.

As someone who exclusively plays the English, I'd like to request that you change from 1.c4 Nf6 to 1.c4 e5. The English is famous as being a transpositional tool, and I'm worried that if you go with 1.c4 Nf6, you're just going to get a carbon copy of one of the d4 openings.
1.c4 e5 tends to lead to its own unique positions. Just a thought.

I used to play the English exclusively, too, and you're right. 1.c4 e5 does lead to its own unique sort of game. I might do that. Thanks for the suggestion!

I think the Traxler would be very interesting, particually at blitz time controls say 1+10s, where without an opening book I would expect far from perfect play.

Games 73 and 74 were the "Jrobi Pincer Attack", which is really the Nimzowitsch-Larsen Attack: Modern Variation, Main Line:
http://www.westportchessclub.org/computer-chess/rybka-vs-houdini-100games.htm

Ivory, this is certainly a good thing to do, i only just saw it. I like some of the games. are the two programs running on the same machine, or are Rybka and Houdini on separate machine?
I think it would be even better to run fewer games but let then ponder for longer: Openings I Suggest, amongst the excellent ones indicated by others:
- French Defense: Steinitz Variation, Boleslavesky Variation (C11), in particular you can let them both play the main line up to move 10, and let them both examine 11. Qf2, and 11. h4 as variations.
- Sicilian Najdorf poison pawn e5 pan push and f5 pawn push
- Sicilian Najdorf Main line 6. Bg5
- QGD, Slav anti-Moscow gambit
- Nimzoindian 4. Qc2 and possibly 4. e3
I look forward to seeing the games.
I'm trying to use the most popular openings to benefit the most people. Plus, they're popular for a reason, right? I assume that means they're the best? Anyway, I'd love to have them grind on some interesting positions (Alekhine-Chatard attack in the French, Anti-Moscow Semi-Slav, etc.), but they're just not popular enough to make the top 15. My choices aren't set in stone, but they're close to being final.
1.e4 = Najdorf, Dragon, Open Sicilian, Ruy Lopez, Italian Game, and French Winawer (the most popular French)
1.d4 = QGD, KID, Semi-Slav (Meran), Slav, Grunfeld, Nimzo-Indian
1.c4 = 1.c4 Nf6...
1.Nf3 = 1.Nf3 Nf6 2.c4 g6...
So I just need one more opening. Ideas?
