You can find many of them here. You will have to install Arena first - download here. You can add as many engines as you wish. I wouldn`t use the best (= strongest) one but the one you like.

There is no psychological weakness in a computer, the ones that sometimes makes an opponent blunder or falter. Thats why i dont play against them too. Its too "perfect"

Guys I can`t agree with you. I think playing an engine is a good way to improve. Some reasons:

  1. An engine makes mistakes and even blunders (it depends on the level you choose).
  2. You can analyze your moves right after you make them.
  3. It helps you to learn and understand openings a lot.
  4. It is possible to learn basic endings - e.g. no human player will play 10 times in a row N+B+K vs K endgame.

Bala do you have a citation (other than your sayso) for chess programs not improving ANYONE's game by more than 1%? Inquiring minds want to know...I agree that reading chess books is essential but I disagree 100% that playing a chess program "doesn't (or can't) improve your game"

Beats me. Maybe because they're patzers? Well, it's just a thought...Here's another one: they don't learn from their mistakes, they don't do anything but play instead of taking time outs occasionally to read chess books, use the Tactics Trainer, Chess Mentor, watch video lessons etc. OTB I occasionally meet local players who refuse to learn anything, because they only want to play chess "their way." I wonder if they also like to drive down the wrong side of the street as well, since that's also totally original.

And BTW "playing with engines is like playing with a stronger player" (ie ALL the time) is dead wrong, many (or most?) engines can be set to play at whatever level you want them to, or ply-depth search so that you can adjust them to be as strong OR as weak as you like.

Laughing  Rybka is great for post game analysis.  But a waste of time to play against.

I prefer playing humans within about 150 ratings points of me.  Playing against strong engines feels like "death by a thousand cuts," at any time control under Game in 60 minutes.

But if you like playing against engines, more power to you.  Have at it.
