Im guessing you are the type of leftist person that will then turn around and say--"the full burka is fine to wear in the UK--even though it is not the dress code of the Europeans"

Your argument would be correct--IF the ladies had a choice where the tournament was being held. As it stands they dont have a choice.

If I voluntarily decide to go to a nation--then your argument stands.

They arent being "forced" to wear anything.  If they choose to go, they will adhere to the countries customs.  If someone chooses not to go, then that is their decision.

"If person A puts a gun to person B head--person B isnt being forced to hand over their money--it is completely their decision what they will do."

The girls want to play chess--they are being forced into a location.
Playing chess and the location are LINKED--if they dont go--they cant play. (ie they are being punished for not wanting to wear religious symbols of submission)

Man--for a chess site (supposedly clever people)--there really are a lot of thick people on here.

I find that even if we need to respect the culture of other countries, being forced to wear a Hijab is ridiculous. Imagine going to a tournament in Spain, and being forced to wear a Flamenco dress to a chess tournament. Just because its part of the culture does not mean you have to force it on foreigners. And they are being forced when you think that its such an important chess event-- That they want to go to!

They should be allowed to wear normal clothes, such as simple long jeans and something like a shirt or another long sleeve top.

And the fact that FIDE didn't say anything is disgraceful.

1. Wearing a flamenco outfit isnt a law.

2. Define "normal"

3. Agree...FIDE is horrible.

What do you think about nudists being forced to wear clothes to tournaments? Is that an outrage?

With ''normal'' i don't mean what the young girls put on nowadays-- you know the short jeans and that-- I mean average clothes that you could walk around town and actually respect yourself.

And the flamenco dress was just to compare, luckily.

The nudists? Oh that's an outrage.

The issue with "normal" is that "normal" is differerent for different countries.

Personally, i would be ok with the flamenco outfit.  I think they look snazzy!

Agreed...young girls need to show more respect for themselves.

I have no problem with this.

The hijab is not part of the Iranian culture. It is part of muslim dress, which is a very different thing. Before the revolution Iran had one of the most modern cultures in the world. Now that the religion has become the government every female must conform to muslim religious dress whether they are muslim or not. That is not  culture - it is religious intolerance.

Avatar of OseanVega

It is true that ''normal'' is different in other countries, but they should also respect that the players do not usually wear a Hijab as it is not part of their culture.

Yeah, aesthetically the flamenco dress is fine, but apparently quite uncomfortable. Its true that I don't know personally, I have never wore one.
