Honor System

I'd like to see an 'honor system' members could join.   Members take a pledge.  Upon taking the pledge the member receives an icon by their name.....a blue star, or...?  All Blue Star members promise to play using the rules of the pledge.

Gold Star members pledge:

No Cheating, no trash talking, no intentional disconnects, accept a rematch or state why unable to do so.  No running out the clock.

There are probably more principles....ideas?

Perhaps the 'Blue Star' members could have special tournaments....perhaps some exclusive benefits

I posted in my blog a topic about my personal "Code of Ethics."

Of course there is no need to accept.  Only those who volunteer to play by a code would do so.  This is really aimed at "White Only" players who win playing white and then run.

There's no fall from grace for those who "run" after having won with White. Some people just like to play a game and call it a day. They are unconcerned with those who feel they should have a right to attempt to settle the "score," recognizing that the opponent's feelings over losing are hardly relevant. I just think such considerations have nothing to do with honor.

And that is why you would not qualify. Just have the courtesy to explain you are not up to another game. Be friendly!

Why you gotta make this a race thing, man?

I think this is one of the most asinine posts I've ever read on chess.com. Especially if "not accepting rematches" is part of the backbone of your idea in which declining means you must explain yourself. Not a chance any of this will ever go through, and personally, I would never agree to such terms on this site.

TheGrobe

You must be pretty new then. This isn't even in the running.

The only thing that would be different about this "honor society" is the issue of accepting re-matches.  Everything else is just the rules of chess.com....and see how far that's gotten us.

Why don't you start a "re-match accepters" group on the site and kick out anyone who ever declines a re-match.

If I don't feel the need to explain why, I shouldn't have to because the loss was sour for my opponent. I do things and have an entire life outside of chess.com, the details of which I don't have to disclose. This shouldn't have to be said, but I'll be patient.

Is "because I don't want to" an acceptable reason?

TheGrobe

Always.

Looks like my post has fizzled out.  But, there appeared a couple of conclusions.  One is that there is some interest in this.   The other conclusion is that there is nothing that can stop the cheating and trash talking.  There is a conclusion I've reached regarding trash talkers.   Trash talkers tend to be the poorer players and are more prevalent in the players who have little chess knowledge or are delusional regarding their knowledge.  The better players tend to avoid such stuff.   Fortunately, there are many well mannered players who are not high rated.

I won´t spend 2 minutes disussing with somebody that wants a rematch, after a game that only lasted 4 minutes.

The "White Only" strategy won´t work, the random pairing will probably give him black the next time, so you don´t have to feel robbed. You are going to get white against another random player, and then you can win.

pocklecod

Interesting...I detected no interest in the idea.

Well, I guess I'll leave this topic and get back to my research for a growth hormone that will restore Bonzai plants to their normal size.

Still more practical than trying to enforce an honor system

Kummatmebro

i hope you are joking

trash talking your opponent is the biggest part of OTB blitz skittles games

starrynight14

Chess itself is like an honours system, with all the granting of titles.  Personally I'd rather it wasn't, then there would probably be less feigned elitism around it.  People are obsessed enough by ratings so that should be enough to talk about anyway and that is perfectly adequate way to chart someone's progress in the sport.

bukerchi

for kummatmebro:  You suspect I'm joking about my research.  A couple of other projects I'm working on:

Using a chunk of Uranium ore to look for lost Geiger Counters.

Building a machine to dispose of and destroy obsolete paper shredders.

But, seriously, an old man like me who learned this game over 60 years ago, will never stoop to insulting and opponent.

And yes, kummatmebro, I jest, and your keen insight to suspect that is correct.
