What are some good coaching materials for beginners?

Capablanca, Chess Fundamentals has the first lessons that every beginner needs and an approach that should be imitated: endings, tactics, openings, repeat.

There are lots of excellent collections of tactics exercises for kids. Bain, Chess Tactics for Students is popular. I like the approach in Ippolito, Chess Tactics for Scholastic Players. Coakley, Winning Chess Strategy for Kids is excellent.

I create my own problem sets. Basic Tactics (150 problems in 18 worksheets), Checkmates and Tactics (150 problems in five worksheets), Checklist of Checkmates (139 problems in seven sets). The last is available for purchase at http://shop.chess-university.com/collections/all.

You can follow my week to week lessons going back several years via http://chessskill.blogspot.com/search/label/Problem%20of%20the%20Week.

I have not been using Chess Magnet School, but some of those whom I coach and many of those who beat my kids use it faithfully. I can recommend it if you want online training that is kid friendly.

 Thanks for all the information.

Do I NEED to have a USCF coaching license, or whatever it is called to become a chess coach? Does it cost money?

USCF certification just gives the illusion that you know what you're talking about. Yes, it costs money. No, you don't need it. There's no legal requirements or licensure to present yourself as a chess coach. Just convince someone to let you show them what you know about chess and, congratulations, you've joined ranks of chess coaches (an elite group that only consists of approximately 50% of all people who've ever picked up a horsey piece).

You become a chess coach by offering your services as a coach. Put an ad in the paper, start a local club, whatever. Just make it know that you're avalible as a chess coach and hope that people are silly enough to want lessons from a 14 year-old with a 1600 rating.

I coach many people, am 14, and have a 1600 rating (1610)

Go you.

Now you are a NM while that guy isn't, congrats!

Because I could beat the other dads, I quickly became a valued coach.

I like to imagine...

"You're gonna coach MY son huh? Well, I'm pretty good, lets see if you know your stuff"

40 moves and 3 checkmates later...

To be a Chess coach you must simply find Chess students. Find ways to advertise.
