How come some players appear to have default ratings of 1800 rather than 1200? - Chess Forums

What's up with that?
1800 even across different formats.

The app and v3 of the site let players choose a strength level when creating a new account. I think there are 5 or 6 levels, from 1000 to 1800. It may go as low as 800.

Wish I'd known that when I joined, then I wouldn't have to play a few dozen games to get from the default (1200) to my real strength (1800-2100 depending on the time limit ... except for bullet at which I suck)
