How did you learn?

Reading posts in 1.d4 or 1.e4 had me realise that many posters here seemed to have learned very differently than myself.

I remember as a child sitting in my brothers room and learning how the pieces move and then playing some horrible games - 1.a4 seemed like such a good move.  After a few games against my brother and father I stopped playing for years until on a bus trip in highschool got me back into it.

I learned from thinking through moves and counter moves in the openings never from actually reading about an opening.  Is this so uncommon in this chess community?

I suck at chess, but I can say that I have never ever read a book on opening theory or anything like that, but I learn from watching my matches and other matches
