I've been thinking about it for a while but now I think I really do want to try and become a tournament director. Could someone tell me the steps or refer me to websites to show me what it takes ?

Why didn't you google it? That is the kind of skill every tournament director needs c:

google holds so much info that I find it easier a few times to just ask the community who can give me a quick direct answer.

thank you

First you have to decide to put up with tons of crap and get no real money for all your services.

You're welcome. But that was 4.5 seconds on google btw :) I have some friends studying to be TD's, I think they have to serve as like an "apprentice" underneath experienced TD's for a certain amount of time, for starters.

You are gonna regret saying that when 400 people a day ask you if they can use whites clock

lol doesnt entrance fee go towards future events I would try to organize and tournaments are usually a weekend thing so during weekdays I can have another job cant I ?

DrSpudnik

Oh yes, don't give up the day job.

Do not plan to make any money.  You'll be giving up your time and effort for the love of the game and giving players an opportunity to play.

My thoughts exactly. Also I think I asked this before but would I be able to enter my own organized tournaments if there were other TDs around to survey the tournament ?

waffllemaster

I think so, yeah.  If your're listed as the main TD then I don't think you can play regardless, but I may be wrong.

I remember ages ago when I was directing a large section in a tournament full of griping, whiny people (all of whom deserved White every round) and a player came up to me as I was updating the results on the crosstable and actually said that he wanted to thank me for doing such a good job. It was the first actual non-demanding, non-bitchy thing I had actually heard all weekend. I almost started to cry.

Ah, such memories.

Now the answer to "Why do I have to have Black again?" is "Because I hate you."

@chessmaster102 congrats on taking the step to being a TD! Most of the comments are right...there isn't pay. But you'll know you're making OTB rated chess happen in your area. And yes...you can play in your own tournaments if you have another TD handy to rule on your games. It's considered bad form to make rulings on your own game. Anyway...here are the steps to becoming a TD.

Buy a copy of the USCF Rules of Chess (5th Edition). Really cheap copies can be found on Amazon. Download the latest RuleChanges from the USCF website on uschess.org (look for the RuleBookChanges.pdf file on the lower right of the front page). Download the application form to become a Club TD (the first level of Directorship). It can be found at http://www.uschess.org/docs/forms/Club_TD_Application.pdf Fill out the form and send it in. You'll be notified of your new TD status soon. Connect with a USCF Affiliate (club) to submit tournament results under their name. Affiliates sponsor tournaments and a certified TD (like yourself, soon) must be present and submit the results. It's best to find an experienced TD in your local area to get some help with some of the new websites you'll want to know so you can submit tournament results. It also helps to read the USCF Forums at uschess.org/forums to understand some of the latest tournament rulings (don't worry...the trolls over there are generally nicer than here on chess.com).
If you need any help, friend/message me.

thanks so much. Theres not much chess here in my city and I think theres only 2 certified TDs in the entire city so I figure if I can become one I could promote chess in my city were tournaments are scarce and perhaps have people try to do the same in other low tournament areas in the nation.

If I lived in Michigan I would give your tournament a visit!
