It's a game. Football's a sport. Collecting stamps is a recreational activity. So is rock climbing, really, although it's been "sportised" by people climbing against the clock. I don't see why it's such an emotive issue for the pro-chess-is-a-sport people.
Good point. It's not a sport, no big deal. Lots of things are sports, lots of things aren't. Since there isn't much money in chess my guess is it has to be some ego thing. Some emotional need thing. For the people who think chess is a sport, they do get all worked up. For those that think it isn't, it's not a big deal. Sort of like a rectangle has four sides. OK, so it has four sides, not a big deal. The people trying to argue "it depends on the definition of "side" obviously have an emotional attachment to the issue.
