How do you feel about computers rated 4000?

Excited: now we can research stuff better?

Sad: I always knew it would be hard to become the best, but now we know for sure computers will always play way better than any human?

When I play against a chess program on my computer, I just feel like it is considering more moves and looking further ahead than I am. I feel like I showed up to a boxing ring wearing a blind fold. I can look all I want for combos, I can try to defend, and I can try to guard key squares, but there is nothing to see since my opponent did not make any blunders. All I can do is try to predict which piece I will lose next, three moves before it happens.

your feelings are correct.  computers today can contemplate millions of moves in a single second.  there's no chance.  it saddens me a little, because it definitely turned chess in a different direction, but on the other hand its' nice having a GM strength 'friend' to analyze games with.  all i have to do is click to open the program.  kinda cool.

so, sad and happy.

Being sad that computers can play chess better than humans is like being sad that people can't run as fast as a car or lift as much weight as a jack.

Very well put Telurides.

DrSpudnik

I feel inadequate enough without computers adding to my woes.

Chess engines are tools.  Even a really great set of tools can't build a house by themselves.
