How does your girlfriend/wife put up with your devotion to chess?

Or does she encourage it? If so, you're a lucky man!

From the experiences of some friends:

-If you're dating, they don't mind or they're impressed by it.

-When they become your lover/gf, they put up with it for a time then dump you.

-When you're married they hate it and nag you all the time about it.

True? I think so.

Ifiwereu,

My respects friend. Looks like you got it all under control. Some women won't tolerate chess time at home AND away from home.

I don't have a girlfriend so I don't have any distractions and can get the max out of my chess... at least that's what I always tell people Embarassed

We don't use "divvy" here in the US.

Had to look it up!

For what it's worth, my ex-wife played chess and we would play every night after the show "Rawhide!" However she was the only female I ever met, who did play chess. I belonged to 3 clubs. 2 in Illinois and one in south Florida. All male members.

Funny story about that. She was in the kitchen "washing dishes" and singing to herself "rollin, rollin, rollin". So I heard her and sneaked into the living room and got out my Blues Brothers soundtrack album, stuck it on the turntable and cranked it up full blast (had a serious sound system). She came running out of the kitchen, with a shocked look on her face and yelled "Where did you get that!".

Rollin.. Rollin.. Rollin...

My wife tolerates it like she does all the other "odd" things I do. But, the other day I was talking with my 18 yo niece about playing chess. She said if a guy wanted to date her and she found out he played chess that would be "a deal breaker."

Just out of curiosity does she also have that with guys who are into gaming?

There is a grudging tolerance, mixed with jealousy. On rare occasions, there are also threats. I am warned that some of my chess books will be thrown out of the house if I don't do this or that. I can't go into details, since it is well past midnight, and I am being observed.

When I play chess she thinks I'm ignoring her. I heard a strange noise. I checked it out. My wife has a BOB.. No more chess for awhile.

Threads assumptions:

All chess players are male.

All chess players are heterosexual.

I think it's specific to chess. We're so misunderstood...

Me ex-wife once burned the bottom of my plastic king with a lighter and my current wife used to say that I was becoming too obsessed, that she would like to see me get out of the house more. So I gave it a rest and we hang out a lot more.

Don't have one, don't want one. Freeeeeeeeeeedom!!!!!!!

My spouse think's (correctly) my chess interest is more beneficial than if I was a "fan" of some ordinary sport.
