That talk says that the 10,000 hour rule is based upon a study of what it takes to reach the top in fields such as chess and athletics.

urk
The 10,000 hour rule is horse hockey. You cannot start playing chess at 25 and become a GM with 10,000 hours of study.

FM Yoshiharu Habu of Japan learned the rules of chess at the age of 25. He is a genius of Shogi, Japanese chess, and annually earns more than 1 million dollars as the strongest pro. Thus he can afford good coaches and travel abroad by his pocket money. Yet. being FM was the best he could have done, despite his money and talent.

No one suggested you could, as far as I know. See post 307, for example.

Well, if you suggested 10,000 hours in post 1, why did you say 20 hrs in post 314?

No, he still plays as top professional shogi player, still earning around 1 million dollars a year. Chess is his hobby.

Post 1 was a long time ago. I've grown wiser.

Fischer started playing at age 6, devoted himself passionately to the game and reached GM at age 15.  If he averaged 2-3 hours a day on chess, that would amount to about 10,000 hours.

Im not familiar with Fischers history. How is his school performance? Did he have a girlfriend like most teenagers? summer jobs?
