How good are the top GMs such as Hikaru Nakamura, really?

What chance would a 1750-1825 level player have of getting a couple games off Hikaru in a 10 game competition if they were playing at their peak?

Picture someone good enough to beat you 95% of the time.
Now picture someone good enough to beat that player 95% of the time.

That's about how good a top GM is.

I'm considering becoming a sub so I can play Naka. The only thing I don't like is, he plays these weird odds matches. If I were to play Hikaru I would want 3+0 or 3+1 with the black pieces with the traditional set-up.

Beggars can't be choosers, as they say.

It's not a legitimate match if the pieces aren't correctly setup.

I couldn't possibly care less.

I've played 1900s at knight odds in 3|0 and slaughtered them game after game.

I've played 1600 rated players in 15 minute games straight up who magically play really well. Wow, I wonder how they managed that? (idiots)

Your blitz rating is only 1 game, but it's 1300. It's so low you're not even playing chess as far as Naka is concerned... and before you get too butthurt that's true for my rating too. He could chat with Twitch 99% of the time and beat us anyway.

"I want to play a real game with him"

Ok but who are you? You're nobody.

It seems that you're either greatly overestimating how good you are, or greatly underestimating the top GMs. Put it this way: Hikaru recently played an "adoption match" against IM Levy Rozman (aka GothamChess) on his Twitch stream. After from losing the first game due to a blunder while he was talking to his viewers he zoned in and effectively crushed an extremely competent IM. That same IM would more than likely beat you and anyone rated under 2000 in the same fashion. That's the kind of level were talking about for these super GMs.

Hah! Levy's a streamer... You're saying I'd lose 10 STRAIGHT to Levy?

Well, chess.com starts you at 1200, and I've only played 1 game, which I easily won. My rating on this site isn't an accurate reflection of my actual strength...

Hikaru slaughters 3000 blitz people while talking to chat and not focusing in general.

llama

Exactly.

There’s a reason why there are only 1500 GMs in the world out of 80 million players.

and also, since Hikaru is at the top of the rating ladder, it’s extremely difficult for him to gain rating since everyone’s either lower or much lower eating than him. Meaning he’s not simply a hundred points stronger than the average 3000-3100, he’s stronger than a hundred points.

llama

Yep, probably true.

He's also, I think, the only top 10 player to go all in (so to speak) on blitz... so he's really freaking good at it in spite of his age and classical world ranking.

Yeah, Levy's a streamer, so what? Hikaru's a streamer too and he's in the top 20. I'm pretty sure you're just trolling at this point, but in case you're serious I'll say this: if your life depended on you winning ONE game out of 10 against Levy you'd be better off just ending it then and there because you're effectively already dead. You really think you'd be able to take a game from Hikaru? Oof.

j0kai

As an unnamed philosopher once said. "There's levels to this 💩".

llama

I think I was saying it in this topic earlier?

But yeah, when the ratings are very far apart, it's actually easy for the higher rated player to find the engine move... the #1 best move... in every position.

You want to know what it's like to play against Hikaru (or almost any GM, not even a top GM?) Just play stockfish on the highest setting. Those are the moves they'll probably play against you, all while not even paying attention to the game.

Smellfungus
You’d have about the same chance as beating LeBron one on one in a first to 21 point basketball game.

I have played stockfish at the highest level and I feel you're exaggerating. It's impossible to make a mistake when playing stockfish and to not be swiftly punished for your mistake. Hikaru is a bad man when it comes to chess and I enjoy watching his YouTube and Twitch channels, but he's still human and can hang a queen just like anyone else.

You don't seem to understand and I don't know how we can make it any clearer. Unless completely distracted or under immense time pressure these super GMs would NEVER hang a queen.

the chances of him hanging a queen is the same amount as the chance a random person out of 80 million chess players will become a GM.

yes. 1 million games is a lot of games.

I don't play on this site often at all (as you can see) but on the site I do play on, I'm rated in the high teens. What chance would a 1750-1825 level player have of getting a couple games off Hikaru in a 10 game competition if they were playing at their peak?

Zero chance, sorry to say.

Hikaru is strong enough to stomp most Grandmasters (2500+ players) into dust.

A sub-2000 player would just get demolished beyond belief. Especially if we're talking "peak" Hikaru.

No, I was saying if I were playing at my peak and Hikaru was having a bad or average day.
