How good is the Backyard Professor?
Has anyone wanted the BYP’s analysis of my game against Anand. (A friend sent it in cuz I don’t have YouTube other than like a school account) The original analysis is on my profile
I'm surprised how recently that video was made. I left a comment on the video telling Kerry he should return to tournaments.
Edit: it just occurred to me that he looks like he's ready to start a rock n roll band reunion tour. Rock on man.
Had a very good game going there. You should be proud.
Thank you ![]()
although I’m still kicking myself that I blundered that rook
The BYP has a U.S.C.F. rating of around 800. He is a little bit underrated, but I wouldn't say he's any better than 1100, and he's certainly not qualified to teach anyone about how to improve at chess, although to his credit, I do admire his enthusiasm and love of the game.
He said he wants to be 2300. He is not 2300, and it is certain that he will never reach 2300. A middle-aged man rated 700 probably cannot ever become 2300, and if he can, it certainly isn't by studying in-depth strategic concepts when his main problems are elementary tactical oversights. Mr. Shirts is going about it completely the wrong way. Books like The Amateur's Mind and Reassess Your Chess are written with the assumption that the reader has basic tactical understanding, at least the tactical ability of a Class D player. This is because it is necessary to develop tactical ability before strategic ability comes in. The BYP doesn't understand this, although it is probably too late for him to become a master anyway even if he did focus his energy on tactics and calculation.
Great post, yes I agree with all you said.
I like this one, and only this one. I know some of the people in this video. I've played the Octopus twice, once in Montana, once in Washington.
What is it with you guys and the BYP. I think the guys great, his enthusiasm is wonderful ( and contagious ) he takes a subject that can be as dry as dust and makes it interesting , his presentation of games with his old school demo board is unique and perfect for players below maybe class B , he's a great teacher (I wish I had teachers like him in high school ) he doesn't claim to be a master player ( if he ever did he was probably joking ) ,most of the really good chess books authors aren't ) so shut up.

Regardless of whether I agree or disagree with your points, telling us to shut up isn't going to work here, so shut up about us shutting up...
;-)

Make it below class E. Also, which "really good chess book author" out there isn't a master?

Unique means one of a kind. I have been using these old-style demo boards longer than BYP has been making videos. It is not unique.
He's a terrible teacher because he does not understand the topic.
In one video, he was reading from Jeremy Silman. I located the passage in my copy of Silman's text and found that he skipped the most important part, which helped me understand why he chose to emphasize something that was not there at all.
He is not a professor. I doubt he is even a college graduate. His self-designation thus mocks those who are professors, who have earned their position through mastery of a subject, and in most cases even making an original contribution to the field (the usual standard for earning a Ph.D.).
If you are rated above 800, his videos are more likely to hinder further progress than to help. You are already better than him.

When was the game played? Was it a simul?
