My brother taught me when 17 years ago, but I didn't start doing any studying of the game until about 3 or 4 years ago

That depends.  I started playing at age 11 when the kid next door taught me.   He also taught the guy across the street.   For the next few years I had someone to play.  They were both nerdy type of guys, me not so much.   In HS I did the usual jock type of stuff, but I enjoyed the game,  and in our trio I might win 1 out of 3.

By my junior HS year they had moved away (military family) and I had no one to play.  Nobody on the football team, or I rode motorcycles with, knew checkers from chess.

In the next 50 years I might have played 3 games?  Then I found chess.com last November and now I have someone to play.  I had remembered the some of the basic strategies (control center, develop etc) and now in the age of high tech tools to work I'm better than I ever was at 16.

I was 15 when Bobby Fischer won the title.  Fun times.

About 50 years. I'm 63. I've read several books by the late Fred Reinfeld. While many were beginner books there was a lot of practical advice in them, like how to decide if resignation was in order

Reinfeld's (and Horowitz's) "First Book of Chess" was the first chess book I ever read.

I have been playing since I was 5, and I am 16 now. but I definitely don't have the experience of a 11 year old player. I used to play it a lot until my interest fell when I was like 8, then I got back into it last year on chess.com, quit it for 6 months because of exams and rejoined when it started getting mainstream again. So in reality like 4 years.
