Assuming you have all the other conditions and you only need time, I'd think 10 years is a reasonable estimate.

Of course "all the other conditions" is the hard part, time is the easy part.

You can usually go from beginner to grandmaster in about 8 months, but it does take some peole as long as a year. Just to 20 tactics exercises every day and keep telling yourself "If I can conceice it, I can achieve it!"

Oh, and don't listen to negative people.

You should be ashamed of yourself for giving wrong information like this. 8 months to become GM? Everyone knows that if you work hard you can make it in 4 months.

If you're the level of player who asks this question on the Chess.com forums and you're already 4 months in, then you will most likely never become a GM. It's not that you can't be a good player, it's that being a GM takes talent that you don't have. I would hold off on setting the bar that high right now and instead try to get to a healthy 1600.

Then you can look a little higher.

Only about 1 in 10,000 chess players make it to grandmaster. I agree with chesster3145 that 1600 is plenty of high of goal at least until u get to that level. Of course you can have alot of fun (and frustration) at any level.

Buy videos from Ichess.net and you will become GM in less than 5 years.

depends on how long the paperwork takes. Are you faxing or scanning your application?

For some reason I read the title as "How long from GM to beginner", which would be a far more original and interesting thread.

It's kind of like saying I just took up basketball, how long till I get to the NBA.
I think the best frame of mind is to keep studying to make small improvements and build on them. Maybe you do have what it takes, just no short cuts

Unfortunately my friend, you ask a question which is very important to you, but many here just want to offer up stupid answers. If you are new to this site, get used to it. There is much serious info on your question on this site, as well as videos online. All of which conclude that it will take a great number of years to reach the status of GM. The most gifted might take 6-10 years. Magnus at age 13, and Karjakin at 12. But I would imagine the average might be somewhere nearer the  15-20 year range. There are other blogs here which have already pursued this question, which you can access to get more opinions. Cheers!

You will need the following:

Time

Money

Effort

Motivation

Skill

And that is no guarantee.

JonHutch

Over 5 years of long study. Even then you have to have the natural talent for it.

BronsteinPawn

Magnus took chess seriously like at 8 or so (he knew the game since 5) and he became GM at age 13, even tho he is talented as hell.

It took for him 5 years, having the talent to become the become a World Champion, to become a GM.

Just saying...

chesster3145

For world-class talents, 10 years.

For Joe Blow, never.
